Velvet peanut butter is a revived classic Detroit brand known for its smooth homogenized texture and rich taste. Started in 1937 by Paul Zuckerman (known as the "Peanut Butter King"), an immigrant from Turkey who began making it in a Detroit garage/basement. Velvet was the first peanut butter to use a special hydrogenation process that kept the oils from separating from the butter. It supplied essential protein to troops during World War II.
Production moved out of state to Georgia after the company was sold in the 1980s. Following its acquisition by the Atwater Brewery founder, operations were returned to Detroit in 2026!
